To Be Someone

February 23, 2010

In the flap of Susan Boyle’s new CD, she dedicates her new CD, I Dreamed a Dream, to her mother. She writes, “to my beloved Mother, to whom I made a promise to be someone.”

I completely ‘get’ what that means…perhaps not what Susan ‘meant’ as I can never know her heart, but I do see so many people…and many times myself…thinking that they must ‘be’ something or accomplish something to be ‘someone.’

The truth is you are already someone. You are a sister to a sibling, a mother to a child, a teacher to a student, a student to a teacher, an example, a dreamer, a person of faith, a child of God. You are already all of these things and so much more. Every day, in every way you touch people all around you. You choose each day what being someone means to you.

Don’t wait for ‘someday’ to be ‘someone’… be you right now!

I’ll join you!

So last week Simon Cowell went on the record saying that what he loved about Susan was that she really didn’t have any awareness of herself. She sang well, but didn’t worry too much about how she looked, etc.

Simon and others said that Susan needs to ‘just be herself’ and sing well.

Hmmm, while I would really *LOVE* to believe that … and maybe the “Britain’s Got Talent” is different from being an American Idol, but Clay Aiken got nothing but heat from being ‘himself.’ And the heat continued for years until he came clean with all of who he is.

I can’t help but wonder, though, if it is even true that Susan didn’t ‘know’ or wasn’t aware of herself… we all know what our inner stuff is. She was quite clear about ‘never been kissed,’ and various other things. My wondering is if other parts of her are coming alive now… in response to having a reason to reach for what she might have wanted to do all along!

Maybe NOW is the time to get the haircut she has always dreamed about, or the color job, or the new wardrobe. And, of course, she can take what works and leave what doesn’t. There’s no harm in playing, right?

One never knows about another’s intentions completely, though, so I say… let’s love Susan just the way she is – frumpy, chic, exploring, and, oh yes, even singing.
