I know God has the ultimate sense of humor and that we align with it when we are in our spirit. How do I KNOW this? It’s because of the silly tricks that are played on our ego.
10. When God first starts calling to you, you don’t know whether to run to it or away from it, and if you go ask someone (as in, I think I’m hearing things), people tend to run away from YOU (which in turn pretty much means you get to work it out with God).
9. Some of the ways that you can receive divine guidance is in symbols and signs. But no one can tell you what these mean for YOU. They are signs and symbols that mean only something to YOU. There’s no God’s Pocket Dictionary to Signs and Symbols! Again, you get to go back to God.
8. When your ego is finally exhausted, and your body is burned up, and your mind can’t think anymore and you are so SICK and TIRED of being SICK and TIRED, you finally let go and surrender, and see so easily how the ONLY thing that put you there is your ego. And the only way out is to TRUST GOD.
7. Just when you have had enough and are ready to give up, go home, and try to forget the magical moments you’ve had with God, something AMAZING (like, truly AMAZING) will happen and convince you that ‘maybe’ there is something to this experience, and it might not be wise to give up just yet. Again, all roads lead back to God.
6. You realize three, four, five, six, 10, 20 years later that you had all (or at least a majority) of the answers in year one, but you just couldn’t get out of your ego long enough to ‘see it.’ You feel like…ugh… and the comfort comes when … you guessed it … you go back to God!
5. When you ‘see the light’ everything becomes ‘crystal’ clear and it is easier and easier to drop the ego. Once you drop the ego, and see how easy it was, you say, “THAT’S it? THAT’S it? I’ve been suffering all this time and THAT’S all I needed to do?” {Can you hear God laughing?}
4. When you fling back the curtain and see the ego for what it is… an IMPOSTER masquerading as YOU, and then you wonder…if I’m not THAT? Then who am I? And you really don’t know the answer. Guess who can help you get the answer? Guess who the ONLY one who can help you get the answer is? LOL
3. You may or may not find yourself completely at Faith’s Doorstep…penniless, egoless, directionless…but if you do, you finally REALIZE that if all that shows up is YOU and GOD, that’s a good day, and it’s better than the days when you had ‘seemingly everything’ and were living in your ego.
2. You begin to see clearly and can ‘see’ what is ‘false’ and what is ‘true’ and soon enough nothing really hurts anymore and everything feels good, and you realize that God does love you, but by that time, you feel so good it is a ‘bonus’ – not something you ‘HAVE to HAVE.’ You KNOW God is with you.
1. And the number one way I know that God’s Cosmic Sense of Humor is alive and well in the world is… that once you love yourself, and you really don’t ‘need’ other people to love you, it’s like you can’t TURN OFF the wellspring of love that pours in – that includes your mother, your father, your brothers, sisters, people you THOUGHT didn’t like you, people you thought you didn’t like, and on and on it goes in one big love fest.

Back in 2005, I wrote a spirit poem… a poem that taps into your spirit… and where you write your spirit into a poem. I can still recall that image of me as my spirit… a flowing spirit that flew next to the feet of galloping, wild horses racing across the western plains. It looked like Arizona… the red rocks in the distance. I wrote in my poem… My spirit runs with the energy of a thousand wild horses. I still get teary-eyed, choked up from that image as I connect to the truth of who I am, my ancestors and horse spirit that runs within me.
Write your own spirit poem.
1. Take some deep breaths and center your attention within your body.
2. Put your left hand on your heart, and speak… “My spirit is…”
3. Allow the feelings, words, visions, knowings to move through you… don’t try to capture it, allow it to flow through you.
4. Experience the feeling of your spirit… embrace all that you are!
5. Jot down what came to you. Collect any gifts that came in the process (totems, ideas, etc.)
I taught a workshop several years ago where I asked participants to ‘draw’ their spirit. A shy, quiet woman went busily to work on ‘her’ drawing. I could feel the clenched energy … the force … the tied up-ness of ‘trying’ to draw herself. I said a quick prayer… and released it to God to help. Soon … she was scribbling all over the page … colors in all shapes and sizes of squiggles. When she held it up to share, there was so much energy coming off of that page, we could ALL feel ‘her.’
Do a spirit portrait if writing a poem doesn’t feel right. Do what feels right to your spirit!
