Last Monday, a friend and I took a G’Nosh Painting class together. As we pulled up and saw more than 25 others there waiting for the class, a surge of expectancy riddled through my body. I have never taken an ‘official’ class. Like my artist mom, I’ve learned on my own. As we settled in to create our impressionist copies, a familiar feeling came over me – relaxation. For most people in the class relaxation is the last thing they would be feeling.

I found myself getting more and more relaxed as the evening went on. My friend is a quiet person and we sat in silence, painting and watching our instructor. I love how I can focus on painting and notice my thoughts as they come in and out in the background. I don’t know how I know what I want to do with the paint, I just know.

Anytime I end up creating something I don’t like it is usually outside of this relaxed, comfortable state. If I try too hard or force an outcome – even with writing – the energy pulls away from the creation.

I dropped off my friend at her house, and as I drove home, I considered the brain waves and something I was taught by spirit many years ago. The alpha brain wave is a highly creative-intuitive state. In between alpha and theta is another wave… what spirit called A-1. I believe it was this state that I go to over and over again to access intuition, art inspiration and insights.

When I’ve worked with clients, I’ve described this relaxed state as similar to a daydream. There’s no trying here. It is only allowing…floating…freewheeling. If you were a ‘daydreamer’ as a child, just go back to that place – it’s likely that it is a natural state for you. Try it and let me know what happens!
