For those of you who are squeamish, you might want to go ahead and back away from the blog now.
For those of you who are curious or might have come across these creatures recently and are wondering what they are all about, then pull up a seat and sit a spell.
A couple of days ago, I felt so sleepy in the middle of the day that I decided to take a nap. It was the weekend and despite the gorgeous weather outside I decided to catch a few extra Zzzzs. As I napped, I dreamt of a house that had been built out except for one room that had been framed but did not have the drywall installed. I walked through this room and saw what looked like ‘socks’ on the floor. I remember huffing about having to ‘pick up’ the socks, but as I reached down and picked them up, a swarm of cockroaches flew through the air.
Now, as nasty as that sounds that is how the dream went. In my dream Mark assured me that he would handle the ‘problem.’ I was disgusted by these creatures that numbered well into the tens of thousands! However, in my dream, I kept wondering why they weren’t anywhere else in the house.
When I woke up I felt different. Besides getting a nice nap, I felt stronger in some way. I thought about the dream and felt happy – not disgusted as you might think. I knew the dream was about the energy of the cockroach as both formidable survivor and also a member of the beetle family. I’ve had more than one beetle enter into my dreams over the last decade!
When I had fallen asleep, I had entered into a higher level of commitment for becoming the writer/author I know I am. I asked to feel better – stronger, despite feeling like this is going to be a loooong journey. When I looked up a source for animal totems, this is what I found.

Cockroaches are beetles and bring the energy of beetles as well:
Beetles aid in transformation, metamorphasis, resurrection and rebirth – rebirth of the soul to a new spiritual ideal and renewed devotion. This animal teaches harmony in the coming changes but utilizing your intuitive abilities and teaches discernment where you need it most. Beetles have a protective quality that will aid in the ability to socialize and communicate effectively by illuminating problems and situations in the correct perspective. Are you eating correctly? Now is the time to examine eating habits. Can you identify which stage of development you are in egg/larva/pupa/adult? Is it time to fly or walk in life? Beetle will teach persistence with charm, trust in the process, proper movement and actions which allows regeneration of your spirit to prosper.
As I documented all of this in my dream journal, I remembered a story I read in Paula Deen’s autobiography, It Ain’t All About the Cookin’ (page 94). Paula’s personal story is one of my favorites for people who have overcome tremendous odds to be who they are in the world.
In her book, she shares a time when she was daring to fly. She had owned her Bag Lady business for a while where she and her sons would deliver sandwiches to local businesses for lunch. She had her sights set on a little restaurant. She took the plunge, signed the papers for a five-year lease. Shortly after that, after several key factors, she planned to divorce her husband. In her daze of working nearly 24/7, she let her house run down, and those little cockroaches swarmed – in her bedroom!
She says in her book it was her hitting rock bottom, but I’m wondering if those little survival experts weren’t there to lend her an energetic hand. It sounds like she could certainly have used the boost.
Gross? Paula certainly felt so. In my dream, I certainly thought so, too. But there’s something unmistakably fierce about a creature that can live for more than a week without a head and only dies because it starves to death. Despite the package, the gift is there – to use that survival energy. When we ask for divine help, sometimes the gift doesn’t come in a package ‘we like’…but we get what we asked for and what serves us at the highest. That’s one thing I’ve definitely learned over the years!
I’m sure there’s a reason why God made a creature so keen on survival. And, I’m sure there’s a reason why we are adept at survival also.
