It’s been just a little over a month since I started training with my friend, Kerry. That first day, as we (more like I did – she’s run several marathons) huffed and puffed along the trail by my house, I could literally feel my lungs expanding to meet the demand. Tuning into my body, I could feel the tightness in my quads, and I could feel the heaviness of my hips in each step. Shifting slightly, I felt the pressure ease and before I knew it, the hour was gone. By the end of the hour, my lungs progressed to the point of not hurting – even in the 32 degree air.
Each morning after that, my body and I continued to show up to meet the demand of walking four minutes, jogging two. By the fourth day, I actually wanted to go out. By the eighth day, I missed it. Our ice day kept us from going out, yet my body wanted to keep showing up.
I just got back…it has been just a month…and today Kerry and I talked about how we were so glad it was 31 degrees out (the weather here has been as high as 75 the past week). There’s something about the crispness of a winter morning, feet hitting the pavement, that is so welcoming.
And, to think that all of this started one morning … just a month ago … a journey that started with one step.
As my friend Debbie always says… “You don’t have to be great to get started, but you do have to get started to be great!”

One day I’ll run like this! I feel like this in my heart already!
